The execution of Ukrainian journalist Feodosii Taran-Honcharenko as “a former borot’bist”

Section: The person in historical context

Abstract: Goal. Using the materials from the archival-criminal case of Ukrainian journalist Pheodosij Taran-Goncharenko, this study aims to reconstruct the prosopographic portrait of the suppressed figure by delving into the key stages of his creative biography and analyzing the pertinent details found in the case documents. Methodology and methods. The author employed prosopographic and anthropological methods. Biographical, problem-chronological, particular search, and hermeneutic approaches were employed to accomplish the aim. Conclusions. One of the lesser-known personalities in Bykivnyansky Martyrology is Pheodosij Taran-Goncharenko. His journalistic background as well as his criminal case from the archives have not had the focus of a scientific investigation yet. The author clarified facts of Taran-Goncharenko's biografy and established his membership in the Youth Union, the USDRP, and the Ukrainian borot’bists based on the found documents, the majority of which are published in scholarly journals for the first time. Furthermore, factual evidence pertaining to his tenure at the publication "Visti VUCVK" was located and examined. During the period when F. Taran-Honcharenko oversaw VUCVK News, the Ukrainian press underwent a total transformation towards communist ideology. The author postulates that there is a strong connection between the history of the Soviet authorities' extermination of the Ukrainian Borotbists and the archival-criminal case of Taran-Goncharenko. The arrested person's circle of friends and his correspondence with P. Lyubchenko, O. Shumsky, and A. Hvylia confirmed this. The criminal case of F. Taran-Honcharenko was included in a series of cases concerning the communist regime's liquidation of the remaining members of the Ukrainian Party of Borotbists. On December 24, 1937, Ph. Taran-Honcharenko was shot “as a member of a Ukrainian terrorist organization”. Most likely, he is interred in the Bykivnyan woodland.
